These rolls may not be as ooey and gooey as the cinnabuns you find in the mall, but they get the job done. They hit that sweet spot without going overboard. Serve them with sugar and cream cheese frosting on the side, so that your guests can top them to their individual tastes.
Yield: 16 rolls
Ingredients:
Pastry:
¼ cup butter
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
pinch of salt
3 tablespoons butter, softened
¾ cup whole milk
1 egg
Filling:
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
4 oz cream cheese
¼ cup butter, softened
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Grease a 9 inch baking dish with melted butter.
3. In a large bowl, combine flour, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Work in 3 tablespoons of softened butter with your hands.
4. In a separate large bowl, beat the milk and egg together. Pour in flour and butter mixture and combine.
5. On a work surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle ¼ inch thick. Spread 2 tablespoons of melted butter across the surface.
6. For the filling, in a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon together. Sprinkle generously over the melted butter and roll the dough around the filling to form a log.
7. Cut the log into rolls and fill the baking dish.
8. Bake for 20 to 25 or until golden brown.
9. For the frosting, in a small bowl, combine the confectioners’ sugar, cream cheese, softened butter, and vanilla extract together until smooth. Serve on the side to top individual rolls to taste.
